News flash, 10,000 steps a day is not as important as you think. If you are getting to 8,000 steps a day and making up the last 2,000 by walking to and fro from the dishwasher, you are probably not getting your heart rate up.
To get the health benefits of exercise, you need to get your heart rate up. Experts have revealed that doing three, brisk ten-minute walks a day could be just as effective as doing your 10,000 steps. Although, I do like the office competition that arises from seeing who can do the most steps every day.
Ten-minute walks, sounds pretty easy, right?! Wrong. It was revealed that 6.5 million adults in the UK fail to achieve just 10 minutes of brisk walking per month!!! This directly equates to 1 in 6 deaths. It literally shocks me and I had to share it. We are in a physical inactivity epidemic.
So, please grab your friend and do a few lunchtime races round the block. Try a brisk walk to that new Italian place you always wanted to try. Nothing tastes greater than something you’ve earned!
