Say Hello to Alyssa!

My name’s Alyssa, I’m 23. I grew up in Reading and now live in South West London with my boyfriend.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I work in central London in Partnership Marketing and love my job.

I started my blog &happenings in May 2018 after a lot of deliberation with some inner demons and fears. It has taken me a while to get properly stuck in due to fear of rejection and judgement but I’m learning to use it as the outlet I intended it to be.

How often do you exercise? What kind of exercises do you enjoy?

I train about 3-4 times a week in my gym and I’m fortunate to have weekly PT sessions too. She really brings out the best in me and always pushes me to reach my limits and true potential. I’m not a huge cardio love though I’m partial to a little HIIT circuit now and then, but otherwise I love strength and weight training. I also practice yoga in a class 1-2 times a week along with self-practice at home.

Any exercise tips for others? 

Yoga gives me a little happy place to forget everything else and focus on my breathing and movement. I’m still trying to master headstands but my constant attempts remind me the mind is more powerful than the body. I have a deeply ingrained fear of falling which is probably down to a skiing accident in 2016 where I badly damaged my knee – so this certainly doesn’t help!

How does exercise make you feel?

It’s only since September 2017 that I truly found joy in hitting the gym/classes. This is predominantly down to my accident that left me with very little confidence in myself. But now I’m fighting fit, exercise feeds me strength and empowerment.

Have you ever suffered with any mental health issues and do you think exercise helps you? 

It’s challenging for me to even admit this whilst writing but I’ve battled depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember. I’ve been in and out of therapy since I was at university. It’s always going to be a part of me and I realise now that it’s not something I can ‘fix’. I manage this on a day-to-day basis by just knowing that some days it’s okay to not be okay. Exercise can massively help me overcome a bad day as well as surrounding myself with amazing people.

Who is your female inspiration and why?

There are so many amazing women in the world so it’s hard to pick to just one. Every mother, daughter and sister has a story she can share. It’s these everyday women that ultimately change the world!

What are your life goals? 

I have so many different goals but one is to complete my yoga teacher training in the next few years with the aim to specialise in using yoga for well-being within the workplace.

How do you hope to achieve these goals?

Get my butt in gear! But also teacher training isn’t cheap so saving those pennies is in order!

Anything you would say to the rest of the MaMo community or other women out there?

Self-love isn’t selfish and joy is not in your phone!

What’s your favourite relaxing hobby? 

I love to bake and have always found it so therapeutic; I’m always testing out new vegan recipes and take bundles of goodies to my PT and her colleagues at the gym!
